Acne can also be treated aggressively without using any systemic medication for patients who cannot take systemic medications due to potential side effects or concerns. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown to be as good as, if not better than, most systemic antibiotics. PDT uses topically applied substance that is naturally found in our body to preferentially reduce sebaceous glands that can cause acne. There is no systemic side effects and the benefits can be seen in less time than systemic antibiotics.
